Headed by UCSI Group Chairman, Dato’ Peter Ng, the initiatives utilized by MyCenTHE ensure the highest quality of performance, service and growth within the industry by certifying a qualified and ever expanding workforce to create an industry standard within the field of tourism and hospitality. These collaborative and stable partnerships between small scale skill training facilities and universities with cooperation from local and professional industries are intended to promote affordable education in the tourism and hospitality industry while simultaneously working towards the central focus of the ETP and our goals as a nation in advancing to developed high income status by 2020, in order to provide all Malaysians with abounding and progressive opportunities.
The Malaysia Centre for Tourism and Hospitality Education (MyCenTHE) was originally created under the name of Entry Point Project 10, which was one of 131 total projects under the Malaysian government’s greater Economic Transformation Programme (ETP).The initiative has identified 12 National Key Economic Areas (NKEA) such as tourism and hospitality, healthcare, agriculture, financial services and oil, gas and energy in an effort to focus the management and distribution of resources used to strengthen Malaysia’s economy into high income status by 2020.
The central focus of the project is to increase workforce productiveness and job attractability by providing at least 50% of our tourism and hospitality staff with diploma qualifications to ensure the highest quality of performance, service and growth within the industry. The founding of the EPP10 led to the formation of the Independent Management Team (IMT), made up of top representatives within the industry, among other industry spearheads and researchers. In February 2011, the first pilot cluster was launched in Sarawak, where special focus was paid to promote a youth centered work-based learning curriculum focused on producing skilled technical talent and inventive tourism and hospitality professionals. In May 2011, MyCenTHE was established as a centre to house EPP10.
Since it’s inception, MyCenTHE have employed the initiatives of the ETP’s roadmap to success, aimed towards producing 50,000 highly educated and competent tourism and hospitality professionals annually to meet the demand of our country’s second highest export earning industry that is poise to triple in growth by year 2020, providing a target earning of 168 billion ringgits.
At present, only 16% of our nation’s hospitality workforces have gained qualifications from graduating a diploma program. EPP10 aims to provide at least 50% of our tourism and hospitality workforce with diploma qualifications by 2020, to turn these plans into action, MyCenTHE has partnered with 5-star and boutique hotels; in an effort to lead the way in creating state of the art intellectual infrastructure needed to support Malaysia’s tourism and hospitality industry by providing students with real-time knowledge, hands on training, and employment opportunities.
Under the direction of the Independent Management Team, additional clusters have been launched in Sabah, Klang Valley, Penang and Terengganu to promote affordable tourism and hospitality education through utilizing collaboration and stable partnerships between small scale skill training facilities and Universities with cooperation from local and professional industries. MyCenTHE aims to promote high-quality training, access to tourism and hospitality programmes, and increased wages to work towards a projected creation of 500,000 new jobs within the industry.
The Malaysia Center for Tourism and Hospitality Education aims to directly support management professionalization as the main centre to employ the Malaysian Government’s economic transformation programmes EPP10 initiatives. With the guidance and direction of the Independent Management Team, MyCenTHE will lead the way in generating a state of the art academic infrastructure needed to sustain Malaysia’s tourism and hospitality industry by providing students with real-time experience and cutting edge employment opportunities.
MyCenTHE has come to life with the support of a comprehensive team of education specialists, industry spearheads and the leaders of government institutions to stimulate tourism and hospitality education excellence. Our programmes exercise strength through scholastic cooperation between academic institutions and industry spearheads, which grant access to diploma courses and first hand high-quality industry experience by training students in active hotels, while allowing students to supplement their educations and other needs by earning an allowance while they study.
Our programme seeks to promote affordable tourism and hospitality education centered around tightly knit work-based learning relationships between the lecturing staff and student body to guarantee the production of skilled technical talent and inventive professionals, competent in managerial tasks, operational fields and related disciplines; by utilizing all of MyCenTHE’s strengths, we can guarantee that all Malaysians get an equal share in robust opportunities within the tourism and hospitality industry by meeting our 2020 ETP goals, as one nation.
